Walking Towards Better Health

Did you know that just 30 minutes of walking a day can:

Prevent illnesses such as diabetes, stroke and heart disease
Improve balance and flexibility reducing falls
Boost mood reducing anxiety and depression

Best of all, walking is accessible to most people. 35% of older adults in Australia rely on walking for exercise. Here’s how to join them:

Get yourself fitted for comfortable, supportive walking shoes. If you need orthotics, see a podiatrist and ensure these fit properly in your shoes.
Increase your time and walking pace gradually. It’s important not to overdo it, you should still be able to comfortably carry on a conversation as you walk.
Wear clothing that is appropriate for the weather and ensure you are protected from the sun. It may be best to venture out in the evening or morning to avoid the heat of the day.
Keep cool by walking in a shopping centre or take advantage of your local gym’s treadmill or elliptical machine.
People who count their steps have been proven to be more active. So, use a pedometer device, step tracking app or fitness band to help keep you on track.

The number one motivation to keep walking is good company – take a stroll with a friend, join a walking group or catch up with your family for an evening constitutional.
